Circa 1925 Original Glass Negative - Babe Ruth Signing a Ball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,040

Original glass negative capturing Babe Ruth signing a baseball for a fan in the grandstand. Ruth is pictured wearing his Yankees road uniform, but even in "enemy" territory Ruth's popularity knew no bounds. This negative, which originates from the Culver Archives, is a wonderful Ruth image and one that would be a fine companion piece to any Ruth autographed baseball. Accompanied by its original paper sleeve, that bears the vintage handwritten black-ink notation "Babe Ruth still writing his name on base balls. Thousands seek autographs." Below that is a separate notation in pencil reading "Ca. 1925." 5 x 4 inches. Because this negative (like all the negatives in the Culver Archives) was leased out to other news organizations, it displays flaws commensurate with its age and former use, which include varying degrees of emulsion loss, chipping, scuffing, and scratching (nearly all of those flaws can be minimized or eliminated through digital processing). Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,040
