1909 Evolution of Chance’s Champion Chicago Cubs Booklet
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
The Evolution of Chance's Champion Chicago Cubs souvenir book is one of the era's rarest baseball publications. This is only the third example that we have ever seen and one of only two we have sold within the past fifteen years. (The other appeared as Lot 701 in REA's April 2005 auction where it realized $2,610.) Its rarity notwithstanding, it is also noted for its striking cover design featuring a photo of Cubs player/manager Frank Chance. The thirty-four page booklet (10 x 6.75 inches) provides a short history of the Chicago Cubs baseball organization, focusing on the first decade of the twentieth century, which included three championship seasons for the Cubs. In addition to Chance's cover photo, the book also features portrait images of individual players, including Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Mordecai Brown, along the top corner of each page. Also featured within its pages are numerous photos of West Side Park and the team's office rooms, as well as a two-page fold-out team panorama of the 1907 Cubs, and two different two-page fold-out panoramas of game action between the Cubs and New York Giants at West Side Park on August 30, 1908. The soft-cover booklet is in Fair condition overall, with the covers detached from the spine (the covers remain partially attached to each other by means of tape), a number of loose pages, a vertical center fold, light staining to the covers, minor edge tears, and tape residue on each page near the spine. The name of a former owner appears in blue ink on the first page.
