1909-1911 T206 White Border Hal Chase and Chick Gandil PSA-Graded Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960

Collection of four Hal Chase poses (of the five in the set) and "Black Sox" member Chick Gandil from the classic T206 White Border series, each graded and encapsulated by PSA (except for one SGC). Chase and Gandil were, in fact, major stars of the day, but their involvement with gambling and with unsavory characters undermined their legends, and ensured that they would forever remain "non-Hall of Famers." Gandil, of course, was banished from baseball as one of the "Eight Men Out." Chase escaped this fate, but his reputation was no better, and he "retired" from baseball in 1919 when no team would sign him in the wake of the Black Sox scandal. This lot consists of the following: Chase/portrait, blue background (EX 5), Chase/portrait, pink background (SGC VG/EX 50), Chase/throwing, dark cap (EX 5), Chase/with trophy (EX 5), and Gandil (EX 5). All cards have a Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising back. This is a very attractive group of cards of significant players who were great, but will forever be remembered for gambling-related scandals. The SMR value for the assigned grades is $1,280. Total 5 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $960
