Circa 1920s Grover Alexander Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320
Vintage photo of Grover Alexander shaking hands with Rogers Hornsby, signed by Alexander on the front. Alexander has scripted his name "Grover C. Alexander" in black fountain pen across his image, with the signature grading "6" overall. Both players are pictured in street clothes here, with Hornsby obviously pleased to see Alexander, judging by the smile on this face. Hornsby and Alexander were teammates on the 1926 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Perhaps this photo was taken shortly after Alexander saved Game 7 of the 1926 fall classic by striking out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alexander died in 1950, making his signature scarce in any form, especially alone on a photo. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays tack holes in the corners, edge wear, and a slight abrasion on Alexander's image. Most of the border flaws have been ameliorated by the mounting process and the photo presents as Excellent. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 19.5 x 23.5 inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,320
