1924 Walter Johnson Advertising Broadside - Direct Johnson Family Provenance!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600

Rare double-sided advertising broadside promoting the syndicated autobiography of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson in 1924. Issued by the Christy Walsh Syndicate, this broadside was produced both as a promotional piece and as a response by the Christy Walsh Syndicate to the release of an unauthorized biography of Walter Johnson that was set to be published at roughly the same time. The bold headline reads "Walter Johnson's/Warning to Editors/regarding his/OWN LIFE STORY/This is my own life story and the only one I have written or authorized - Walter Johnson." The front of the broadside features photos of Johnson as a rookie in 1907 and in 1924, as well promotional text for the syndicated autobiography. The reverse features a photo of Johnson posing with many other stars of the day at the Addie Joss Day memorial game in 1911 and offers additional promotional text. The reverse headline announces the particulars of the syndicated autobiography that was to run in select newspapers: "Runs 12 Winter Weeks 30,000 Words Wonderful Old Photos." This is, to the best of our knowledge, the only example extant of this broadside and its rarity is equaled only by its impressive provenance. This piece originates directly from a Johnson family member and had been in the family's sole possession prior to its having appeared as Lot 898 in REA's October 2013 auction; it has been consigned to this auction directly by the purchaser. The broadside (18.5 x 24 inches), which is printed on thin paper stock (which further explains its great rarity), displays one vertical and three horizontal fold lines (as issued), as well as general wear commensurate with its age, former use, and fragile nature. A number of small-to-moderate tears are evident throughout, including many which have been repaired on the reverse with vintage clear tape, as are a few small areas of surface paper loss. In Good condition overall, easily restored if desired, but still extremely presentable as is, with bold, colorful graphics. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $600
