Circa 1890s African American Ballplayer Cabinet Photograph

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200

Scarce circa 1890s cabinet photo featuring an unidentified African-American ballplayer in a full-length pose. In this formal studio photograph, the nattily attired young player holds a ball in his left hand and a bat in his right hand, with the bat resting over his right shoulder. His attire includes a pair of decorative suspenders and a straw hat. The photographer's credit ("P. Rosencrantz, Tarentum, P.A.") appears on both the front and reverse of the mount. Nineteenth-century photos picturing African American baseball players, especially formal cabinet photos, are exceedingly rare. This is the first we have ever handled and we cannot recall the last time we have seen a similar example at auction. The cabinet (4.25 x 6.5 inches), which features scalloped borders, displays light border wear, as well as a few light, scattered stains on the reverse. The photo itself displays outstanding clarity and is free of any significant flaws. Graded EX 60 by SGC. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
