1886 J. Wood Studio Cabinets - Esterbrook (N167 Old Judge Pose)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
Extremely rare and very likely unique cabinet card, picturing Dude Esterbrook of the New York Giants, produced in 1886 by noted baseball photographer Joseph Wood. Sophisticated card collectors will instantly recognize that the photo offered here is the very image used to produce Esterbrook's tobacco card in the rare 1886 N167 Old Judge issue. It is also fascinating to note that this photo was obviously taken at the very same sitting as that which was used to produce Esterbrook's rare 1887 Kalamazoo Bats New York player card. This formal studio photo captures Esterbrook in uniform. The photographer’s name and address appears in print along the base of the mount (“J. Wood, Photo – 208 Bowery, N.Y.”). The photo displays emulsions that have left it with varying degrees and shades of toning. The cabinet card displays two small corner chips as well as surface paper loss on the reverse from having once been removed from an album. It is also possible that this card has been professionally cleaned. Encapsulated as “Authentic” by SGC. This is a fascinating, and very likely unique, photographic cabinet card by Joseph Wood, one of the premier studio photographers of the era, with a direct connection to the rarest style of Kalamazoo Bats cards and featuring the very image used to produce Dude Esterbrook's card in the 1886 N167 series, the very first Old Judge baseball-card set ever issued. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,440
