1933 R333 DeLong Gum Complete SGC-Graded Set (24) - Lionel Carter Collection!
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $6,000
Extremely attractive complete set of this classic 1930s prewar gum issue, entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC, highlighted by fifteen Hall of Famers, including key card #7 Lou Gehrig. This complete set has the extra special distinction of having originally belonged to pioneer collector Lionel Carter (each card is pedigreed by SGC attesting to this fact). In fact, in reading about Lionel Carter and his collection in every extensive published article about him, it would be impossible not to note that Carter identified this DeLong set as the very first set of baseball cards he ever collected, and that he personally purchased them in packs in 1933! Extraordinary provenance aside, DeLongs have always held a special place in the hearts of collectors. The small size of the set, its relative rarity compared to most others card sets of the era, its unique dimensions and design, and its status as a “one-year issue” all combine to make DeLongs one of the most highly regarded of all 1930s issues among serious collectors.
The SGC grades are as follows: Four EX 60: #8 Cuyler (HOF), 16, 18, and 22 Klein (HOF). Nine VG/EX 50: #2 Simmons (HOF), 3, 6 Cochrane (HOF), 9, 12 Traynor (HOF), 14 Gomez (HOF), 15, 20, and 21 Foxx (HOF). Seven VG 40: #1, 5 Gehringer (HOF), 7 Gehrig (HOF, particularly attractive, presenting as Vg-Ex+ from the front, with a corner crease only visible from the reverse responsible for the downgrade), 11 Lindstrom (HOF), 13 Maranville (HOF), 19 Hafey (HOF), and 23 Grove (HOF). Two GOOD 30: #17 and 24 Goslin (HOF). Two FAIR 20: #4 Terry (HOF) and 10.
Each card in this set presents with bold colors and is extremely attractive, with the lesser-graded examples downgraded primarily due to honest wear at the corners or unobtrusive creases. This complete set presents a rarely offered relatively affordable alternative to a higher-grade set without sacrificing the visual qualities that make the DeLong Gum set so appealing, and it includes particularly strong examples of key cards Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. This is a very clean, attractive, and consistently graded set of these 1930s classics. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $6,000
