Fourteen Signed Consent Forms for a Proposed 1990 Perez-Steele Negro-League Art-Card Set Including Irvin, Dandridge, Leonard, Day, and Radcliffe

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $420

In 1990 the Negro League Baseball Player's Association (NLBPA) received grants from a number of former Negro League players to use each player's name and likeness in publicity and advertising for the purpose of supporting and promoting the NLBPA. Included in such publicity and advertising was the use of each player's likeness for use in the manufacture of a Negro-League card set produced by the Perez-Steele galleries. For reasons unknown, the project with the Perez-Steele galleries never came to fruition, and no card set was ever produced. Offered here are fourteen one-page "Member Consent Forms" issued for that 1990 project, each signed by a different Negro League player, as well as by Richard Berg, president of the NLBPA. Each form has also been signed by a witness. The fourteen players represented here are Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Walter "Buck" Leonard, Ray Dandridge, Monte Irvin, Leon Day, Gene Benson, Jimmie Crutchfield, Max Manning, Verdell Mathis, Leter Lockett, Rudolph Fernandez, Mahlon Duckett, Armando Vazquez, and Jehosie Heard. Also included is a one-page handwritten letter signed by Francis Matthews regarding his lending the NLBPA a photo negative and audio cassette. The signatures, scripted in a variety of inks, range in grade from "8" to "10," averaging "9." Accompanying the consent forms are a few related documents, including the cover letters from the NLBPA, sent to Vasquez and Radcliffe, a one-page handwritten letter signed by Mahlon Duckett, a small snapshot of Duckett, and a small, handwritten sheet of paper (not signed) from Leon Day in which he describes the color scheme of his old uniform. Thirteen of the fourteen consent forms (8.5 x 11 inches) have three notebook holes punched along the left border, and a few others have additional documents stapled to them; otherwise, all of the material is in Excellent condition overall. Total: 14 signed consent forms and a few additional letters and related documents. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $420
