1961 New York Yankees Limited-Edition Signed Ron Lewis Lithograph with Mantle
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720
The 1961 Yankees limited-edition signed lithograph is one of the most exceptionally conceived signing projects in the history of collecting. Created in 1990 by noted sports artist Ron Lewis, this impressive 37 x 24.75-inch lithograph pictures the 1961 New York Yankees in a traditional team pose. It has been signed in the lower margin by the following thirty-two team members: Mantle, Berra, Ford, Arroyo, Blanchard, Boyer, Cerv, Clevenger, Coates, Daley, DeMaestri, Downing, Duren, Gardner, Gonder, Hale, Houk (Mgr.), James, Johnson, Lopez, McDevitt (twice), Reed, Reniff, Richardson, Sain (coach), Sheldon, Skowron, Stafford, Terry, Torgeson, Tresh, and Turley. All of the signatures have been scripted in blue Sharpie and grade either "9" or "10." The lithograph, numbered "540/1000," is also signed by the artist in the lower right corner. This 1961 Yankees signed display piece is extraordinary, both in terms of size and visual appeal, and is missing only the signatures of Art Ditmar, Tony Kubek, and Lee Thomas for modern-day completeness. (Roger Maris, Elston Howard, and Duke Maas passed away prior to the creation of the piece.) Along with Ron Lewis' 500 Home Run Club artworks, this lithograph is among his best-known works. The signing of these lithos was a historic occasion and it is surprising how rarely examples surface. This is just the second we have ever offered and one that would make for a fine addition to any substantial Yankees collection. The litho displays a few minor surface wrinkles and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Matted to total dimensions of 43.5 x 31.5 inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $720
