1929-1934 Philadelphia A's Scorebook with World Series and All-Star Games - Signed by Many including Hack Wilson, Kiki Cuyler, and Chuck Klein
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $720
Offered here is a fascinating vintage "Reach's Official Score Book" that primarily records games played by the Philadelphia Athletics for the seasons of 1929, 1930, and 1931. Also included in the book are scored games for the 1934 All-Star Game in which Carl Hubbell fanned five straight and the first five games of the 1934 World Series between Detroit and St. Louis. According to our consignor, he obtained this book with the understanding that it once belonged to a Philadelphia sports reporter. Given that it is dedicated almost exclusively to games played by the Philadelphia Athletics, and is a professional-style scorebook published by "A. J. Reach, Wright & Ditson, Inc. ("Endorsed Generally By The Base Ball Reporters," as noted in print on the title page), it seems reasonable to assume that the book did once belong to a professional sportswriter. In addition to the recorded games, the score book also features the signatures of the following eighteen players on the interior front and back covers: Hack Wilson, Kiki Cuyler, Chuck Klein, Mickey Cochrane, Hal Elliott, "Buzz" Arlett, Les Mallon, Barney Friberg, Fred Koster, Dick Bartell, Fred Brickell, Pinky Whitney, Clise Dudley, Burt Shotton, Spud Davis, Rube Walberg, Mule Haas, and Roy Mahaffey. All of the signatures have been executed in pencil and grade "8" on average; however, it should be noted that both covers have been torn in half and repaired with clear tape. On the front cover, the tape repair has not held the test of time and the split is once again complete, which, unfortunately, bisects the Hack Wilson signature and also affects, to a lesser degree, the Friberg signature. On the back cover, the repair has held, but the break significantly affects the Cochrane signature. With regard to the scoring, the book records twenty-five A's games from 1929, as well as two played between the Yankees and Senators that year. For 1930, the book records six A's games and two Phillies games. Six A's games and one Phillies game are recorded in 1931. The 1934 All-Star Game recorded here is famous for Carl Hubbell's memorable performance in which he struck out, in succession, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin. The book also records the first five games of the 1934 World Series, which was eventually won by St. Louis in seven games. Game 5 of the 1934 World Series is the last entry in the book. Needless to say, many Hall of Fame players are featured in the recorded lineups, including Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Foxx, Cochrane, Simmons, Grove, Goslin, Rice, Gehringer, Heilmann, Manush, Ott, Terry, Lindstrom, Hubbell, Averill, and Ferrell. The hardcover book (7 x 4 inches) displays heavy wear. In addition to the aforementioned cover tears, the book also has tape repair to the spine and a few torn pages. In Good condition overall. Together with what appears to be the back cover to another scorebook, upon which are written the formal scoring notations for each play. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300.
