1906 Constitution and Playing Rules of the National League - Compliments of Harry Pulliam!
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $420
Bound copy of the Constitution and Playing Rules of the National League 1906, published by A. G. Spalding Bros. What makes this eighty-six-page volume all the more interesting for collectors today is the gilt-stamped lettering on the front cover that reads "Compliments of Harry C. Pulliam." Harry Pulliam was the National League president from 1903 until 1909, the year in which he committed suicide. A vintage pencil notation on the interior front cover reads "Prop of Roy Thomas 1907." Roy Thomas was one of the game's top outfielders with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1899 to 1911. If this book did once belong to Thomas (and we assume it did), we speculate that it is likely Pulliam presented bound copies to all of the National League teams, and Roy Thomas, as the captain of the Philadelphia club, would have been a natural choice to be the keeper of the volume. Regardless of its history, it remains an unusual souvenir dating from the early 1900s and represents the first such example we have seen. The booklet (5 x 7 inches) displays moderate-to-heavy wear to the red-leather covers and a few of the pages exhibit minor tears. In Very Good condition overall.
