1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin - Clark Griffith
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $960
Cameo Pepsin Gum pin of Hall of Famer Clark Griffith, featuring him as a member of the Chicago Colts. Pepsin Gum pins are one of the rarest and most significant of all baseball pinbacks. Not only were they the first baseball pinback set, but one of the few baseball issues of any kind dating from the late 1890s. This pin was issued during the height of Clark Griffith's career as one of the top pitchers in the National League. Griffith won twenty or more games seven times during his career, including six consecutive seasons between the years 1894 and 1899. After his playing days were over, "the Old Fox" became one of the most influential figures in the game, first as a manager and later, as a team owner. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. The offered pin, which is complete with its original paper backing, displays a small area of foxing on Griffith's face and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag. Diameter: 1.25 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $960
