1884 Lawson's Game Collection (55 Cards Plus Boxes, Instructions, and More!)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $960
Issued in 1884 by the Lawson Card Company of Boston, Massachusetts, the Lawson's playing card set features thirty-six cards with extremely striking baseball-related designs. This lot includes a very attractive partial (20/36) and near-complete (35/36) set, each a slightly different variety: 1) Partial (20 of 36 cards) standard edition Lawson's set in Near Mint condition. Missing sixteen cards for completion. The partial set is accompanied by the original 20-page instruction booklet explaining the rules of the game, which features a black-and-white woodcut of a batter on the cover. Also included are two "Value of Cards" cards. The backs feature a very attractive baseball scene in blue and white. 2) Near-complete (35 of 36 cards) "deluxe" edition Lawson's set in Near Mint condition. Missing only one card (“3 Strikes Out”) for completion. The deluxe edition is identical to the standard-edition cards except that each card has beautiful gilt edges and the same very attractive baseball scene on the reverse is in brown and white, as opposed to blue and white. Instead of a thin cardboard box, the deluxe set is presented in a thicker brown cloth-covered cardboard box with game identification in gold lettering, and with matching interior cloth-covered sleeve. The cards are in Ex-Mt condition overall. The exterior of the box has some minor handling wear, but it still displays as Ex. This set (minus 1) is also accompanied by its original 20-page instruction booklet, which is missing the cover. Also included are two "Value of Cards" cards and an extra original box (Vg condition). Total: 55 cards.
