Marques Haynes & Goose Tatum Signed Basketball-Contract Collection

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $300

Collection of seven contracts, two checks, and one document, each signed by legendary basketball Hall of Famer Marques Haynes, with two of the items also signed by fellow basketball Hall of Famer and longtime teammate Goose Tatum. Haynes, who was famous for his dribbling skills, and Tatum, known as the original "Clown Prince of Basketball," performed with the Harlem Globetrotters for many years before contract disputes resulted in their forming their own team in the early 1950s. Their team went by many different names over the next few decades, including the Original Harlem Magicians, the Harlem Magicians, and the Fabulous Magicians, during which time they continued to delight fans all over the world with their comedic antics on the basketball court.

This collection of signed items dates to their partnership following their split with the Harlem Globetrotters and is comprised of the following: 1) One-page contract, dated "October 1955," between "The Original Harlem Magicians" and Herbert Joseph (representing "B'nai B'rith, Dist. Grand Loge #2"), signed in blue ink (grading "10") by both Haynes and Tatum. Also signed by Joseph. 8.5 x 14 inches. Vg, with fold lines, creases, and light staining. 2) One-page receipt (on onionskin) concerning partial payment for a performance by the Harlem Magicians at Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 29, 1961. Signed in pencil (grading "9/10") by both Haynes and Tatum in acknowledgment of the payment. 8.5 x 11 inches.Vg- Ex, with horizontal and vertical folds as well as light creases. 3-4) Two Fabulous Magicians business checks (8.25 x 3 inches), each made out in the amount of $1,000 to former middleweight boxing champion "Sugar Ray" Robinson and signed in blue ink by Haynes (one signature grading "10," the other "9"). Both checks have been endorsed by Robinson in blue ink on the reverse (grading "10"). One check is dated February 11, 1969, and the other April 2, 1969 (both Vg, with vertical folds and small tears). 5-10) Six one-page contracts (8.5 x 14 inches), spanning the years 1969 to 1971, each signed in blue ink by Marques Haynes (grading either "9" or "10"). Each of these contracts, the clauses of which are nearly identical, represent agreements between the Fabulous Magicians and local organizations for the staging of basketball games. Each contract specifies the date and location of the game, and stipulates that the Fabulous Magicians are to receive sixty percent of the receipts from ticket sales. Haynes has signed each contract as president of the Fabulous Magicians. All of the contracts display three horizontal folds and two notebook holes along the top border. Ex overall. Total: 10 items (6 contracts, 2 checks, and 1 document). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $300
