Possibly Unique 1949 Bowman #50 Jackie Robinson Rookie - Blank Back
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,000
Presented is a fascinating and possibly unique blank-back 1949 Bowman example of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. This is one of Robinson’s most striking and popular cards, and one of the great classics of postwar bubble-gum cards. The offered card presents, from the front, as a normal final-production card, with a portrait of Robinson that practically jumps off the flawless bold, red background. Centered to the left, with even wear to the four corners. The reverse is entirely blank, with light creasing visible. While there are many examples of 1949 Bowman error cards, most notably those with off-register, fully printed reverses that long ago originated from sheets given away or thrown away by Bowman quality control and salvaged by Philadelphia-area kids (where Bowman was located), this is the first blank-back 1949 Bowman that we have ever seen. This card was discovered in an old-time collection by our consignor along with four other blank-backs from the same year, including Yogi Berra. Graded VG 40 by SGC, the card exhibits a natural factory cut, which suggests that this card came off the press as is and likely made it into a pack as opposed to being a hand-cut error from sheets. The provenance of five factury-cut cards discovered together (in addition to the fact that we don't recall ever seeing any blank-back 1949 Bowman error sheets anyway) leads us to believe that at least one black-back sheet slipped through Bowman quality control. While at this late date we can only speculate on how exactly this error occurred, it is a certainty that this is an extremely rare (and very likely unique) printing anomaly featuring one of the key cards from the 1949 Bowman set, Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,000
