1949 Kid Nichols Day Souvenir Card - Signed by Kid Nichols

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600

Small illustrated card, issued as a "Souvenir of Kid Nichols Day" on August 16, 1949, signed by "Charles A. 'Kid' Nichols" in blue ink (grading "9/10") vertically along the left front border. Nichols, who was seventy-nine years old at the time, had just been inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame on June 13, 1949, so it was only natural that the "Co-Operative Club of Kansas City" decided to honor him with a special day two months later (Nichols was a resident of Kansas City, Missouri). We don't know how many of these souvenir cards Nichols signed on that day, but the number was probably quite modest. We have seen a few others over the years (approximately ten), and believe that "Kid' Nichols himself may have had a few extras and sent them out in response to autograph requests. Nichols' signature, in any form, is very scarce because he died just four years later, leaving Hall of Fame autograph collectors only a very narrow window of time to acquire his autograph. The card (4 x 6 inches) displays a number of small creases and minor edge tears. In Very Good condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
