1915 E106 American Caramel Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $720

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Very attractive example of New York Giants Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from the E106 American Caramel set. This exceptionally rare issue shares designs with several other closely related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Nadja Caramels, Dockman & Sons, etc.) from the same era. These cards have glossy surfaces, which are very susceptible to cracking. This is a beautiful card that has an appearance superior to its SGC-assigned grade. The offered example is perfectly clean both front and back, with even wear to the corners, vibrant colors, and outstanding centering. Moderate surface wrinkling at the top of the card accounts for the downgrade. The back is also bright and clean, with bold text. It is interesting to note Mathewson’s name is misspelled “Matthewson” on this card. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. In addition to being issued a few years later than most caramel cards, E106 American Caramel Company cards are considerably rarer than most traditional "E" cards. This is an outstanding example of one of Mathewson's most striking cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $720
