1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Walter Johnson

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540

Key Hall of Famer Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators from the E253 set issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which is of all the more special note as it features photos that are unique to this set. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. Oxfords are printed on somewhat thin card stock that is particularly prone to wear. A complete twenty-card checklist appears on the reverse of each card. Graded GOOD 2 by PSA, the offered card has a stronger overall appearance, with strong corners and a flawless image. It is downgraded due to two small creases on the front of the card. Boldly printed reverse with light natural toning. A very presentable Hall of Fame example from this rare caramel-card set. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $540
