1951 Topps Ringside Boxing Complete Set (96)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960

Complete set of Topps "Ringside." Topps' first attempt at boxing cards was the 96-card "Ringside" boxing series issued in 1951. The exceptional artwork and the inclusion of boxing greats from all eras, such as Rocky Marciano, John Sullivan, Gene Tunney, Joe Louis, and Ray Robinson, among others, has always made this set one of boxing-card collecting's premier issues. Topps apparently found much greater success with baseball and football. This is confirmed both by the relative scarcity of "Ringside" cards, and the fact that this was the only Topps boxing set ever issued. The production quality of this issue, however, is equal or superior to that of all early 1950s bubble-gum cards issued by Topps or Bowman. Condition of the set is 30% Ex to Ex-Mt, 25% Vg-Ex, 33% Vg, and 12% lesser (including five trimmed cards). Fourteen cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (except three SGC). Keys: #1 Lesnevitch (Vg+), 11 Baer (Vg-Ex), 32 Marciano (Gd), 43 Robinson (Ex), 49 Murphy (SP, Gd), 54 Jeffries (EX-MT 6), 56 Gans (SGC EX 60), 69 Sullivan (EX 5), 88 Louis (Vg), 95 Tunney (Gd+), and 96 Charles (EX-MT 6). Other Graded Cards: #2 (EX 5), 6 (SGC VG/EX 50), 7 (EX-MT 6), 9 (VG-EX+ 4.5), 19 (EX+ 5.5), 46 (SGC EX 60), 50 (VG 3), 52 (EX+ 5.5), 64 (EX 5), and 82 (EX 5). All cards are bright and crisp, with bold colors; hard-to-see creases or honest corner wear account for most of the lower grades. This is an extremely attractive complete set of this classic 1950s Topps issue that can be had at a fraction of the cost of a higher-graded set. Total: 96 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $960
