1948 Bowman Football Complete Set (108) Including #22 Baugh Rookie SGC NM+ 86 and #36 Turner Rookie SGC NM/MT 88

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900

7% Nr/Mt or better, 50% Ex to Ex-Mt, and 43% Vg to Vg/Ex (with a few lesser). Offered is a complete set of 108 cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first football-card set issued by Bowman Gum, highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers, including Sammy Baugh. Eight cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Tereshinski RC (Vg), 3 Lujack RC (Vg-Ex), 7 Van Buren RC (Fr), 8 Washington (NM/MT 88), 11 Wiley (NM/MT 88), 12 Conerly RC (Vg), 14 Seno (NM/MT 88), 17 Trippi RC (Vg-Ex), 22 Baugh RC (NM+ 86), 26 Waterfield RC (Vg-Ex), 36 Turner RC (NM/MT 88), 61 Wojciechowicz RC (Ex), 63 Pihos RC (Vg), 64 Sulaitis (NM/MT 88), 80 Dudley RC (Vg), 83 Ross (NM/MT 88), 99 Gilmer RC (Vg-Ex), 107 Luckman RC (EX 60), and 108 Ray (Ex). The 1948 Bowman baseball set was so popular that Bowman decided to try its hand at football cards later in the year, producing this ambitious 108-card football set designed very similarly to its inaugural baseball issue. Football cards never caught on quite like the baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set will always be the first, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight graded cards (not including the 100 ungraded cards!) is $2,215. Total: 108 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,900
