1945 Johnny Evers Signed Sheet
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
Sheet signed by Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers, one third of the legendary double-play combination Tinker to Evers to Chance. Fulfilling what was obviously an autograph request from a fan, Evers has inscribed the sheet "To my friend/Dick Jaffrey/Sincerely/John J. Evers." Both the text and signature are boldly scripted in blue fountain pen and grade "9/10." Although the sheet is undated, it is accompanied by its original mailing envelope (bearing the printed return address of the "Johnny Evers Sporting Goods Co.") postmarked June 6, 1945, from Albany, New York. The Johnny Evers Sporting Goods Company was founded in 1923 and remained in business until 1994. Evers was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946, but died just one year later, resulting in the scarcity of his signature today. The sheet (5.5 x 7 inches) displays a horizontal fold and is in Excellent condition overall. The envelope (6.5 x 3.5 inches) is also in Excellent condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,440
