1959 Gil Hodges Los Angeles Dodgers Contract
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $4,200
Four-page fold-over contract, undated, between Gilbert Ray Hodges and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc., signed in blue ink by "Gilbert Ray Hodges" (grading "10") and club president "E. Bavasi" ("9/10"). The one-year agreement, for the 1959 season, calls for Hodges to receive an annual salary of $42,000. Included with the contract is a period copy of the cover letter (typed on onionskin) sent to Hodges by Bavasi, dated January 12, 1959, in which he jokingly writes "Here is your contract. I don't care whether or not you sign it." His postscript adds: "See you in New York." Hodges batted .276 with 25 home runs and 80 RBI in 1959 to help lead the Dodgers to their first World Championship in Los Angeles. One of the most popular players in Dodgers history, Hodges finished his career with 370 home runs, 1,274 RBI, and a .273 lifetime batting average, numbers which continue to earn him support for future election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. This is the only Gil Hodges Los Angeles Dodgers contract we have seen and its rarity is not surprising given the fact that he only played four seasons in Los Angeles (he spent twelve years with the club in Brooklyn). The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) remains in Near Mint condition. The onionskin cover letter (8.5 x 10.75 inches) is in Very Good to Excellent condition, with two areas of tape remnants, as well as a diagonal crease and small edge tear. Total: 2 items (contract and accompanying onionskin cover letter). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
