1928 Chicago Cubs Team-Signed Ball with Wilson, Hartnett, and Cuyler
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,320
Official National League (Heydler) ball signed in blue fountain pen by the following twenty-five members of the 1928 Chicago Cubs: Wilson (sweet spot), Cuyler, Hartnett, McCarthy (Mgr.), Stephenson, English, Heathcote, Doolan (coach), Grampp, Root, Jones, Malone, Beck, Holley, Burke (coach), Grimm, Tincup, McMillan (sweet spot), Gonzalez (sweet spot), Carlson, Nehf, Maguire, Bush, Butler, and Blake. Signatures range from "3" to "7," averaging "5." This ball was most likely signed in spring training of 1928, as Grampp did not make the team that year. (Percy Jones was traded to the Braves on November 7, 1928, which precludes it from being a 1929 team ball.) The signature of Hal Carlson, who gave up Mel Ott's first career major-league home run in 1927, is extremely rare because he died in 1930 at the age of thirty-eight. The ball displays a tiny area of discoloration on a side panel and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,320
