1871 Ulysses S. Grant Signed Appointment

Government appointment, dated March 13, 1871, signed by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), eighteenth President of the United States. The document appoints Alanson A. Vance to be "Postmaster at Morristown in the State of New Jersey." Signed by "U. S. Grant" as President of the United States and Hamilton Fish as secretary of the interior. Grant's signature has been scripted in black ink, grading "9/10." The embossed white seal of the United States appears in the lower left corner. The document (17.75 x 11.5 inches) is moderately toned and displays one vertical and two horizontal folds, all of which have received conservation on the reverse in the form of reinforcement with rice paper.
