Rare 1950 Num Num Potato Chips Cleveland Indians Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480
Exceedingly rare Num Num Potato Chips advertising display featuring a team photo of the 1950 Cleveland Indians, including Bob Feller, Larry Doby, Luke Easter, Lou Boudreau, Early Wynn, Bob Lemon, Al Rosen, and Joe Gordon. The white lettering along the top border reads "Cleveland Indians 1950," while the orange lettering along the base proclaims "Look for us in every box of Num Num Potato chips." This display piece was most likely distributed to local merchants to promote the company's 1949-1950 redemption offer of two individual Cleveland Indians player photos in exchange for ten cents and a box top from one of Num Num's various snack foods. (In 1952 the company included an individual card of a Cleveland Indian player in each snack food package as well.) It may also have been issued as a premium. The uncertainty regarding this piece is due to the fact that we have never seen another example! Not surprisingly, it has been consigned by a longtime collector from the state of Ohio, where it was discovered many years ago. It's rarity is due not only to its being a regional issue, but is also certainly related to its fragile nature. The piece, which measures 17 x 11 inches, is printed on very thin, glossy stock, almost guaranteeing that few would survive. In Good to Very Good condition overall, with a vertical center fold (probably as issued), moderate creasing throughout, a small stain along the top border, and a few tiny edge tears. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $480
