1957-1958 Topps Basketball Complete Set (80) Including Bill Russell Rookie PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,600

77% Ex to Ex-Mt, 20% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 3% lesser. Very crisp and clean complete 80-card set of 1957-1958 Topps Basketball, highlighted by the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Bob Cousy. Many cards are downgraded solely due to centering issues, which are notoriously common within this set. Ten cards are professionally graded (six PSA and four GAI). Keys: #1 Clifton RC (Gd), 2 Yardley (Ex), 3 Johnston (Ex), 5 Sharman RC (Ex), 6 King (PSA EX-MT 6), 8 Ricketts (GAI EX-MT 6), 10 Arizin RC (Ex), 13 Schayes (Ex), 15 Ramsey RC (Vg-Ex), 17 Cousy RC (Vg-Ex), 19 Heinsohn RC (GAI EX 5), 24 Pettit RC (Vg-Ex, Signed), 25 Krebs (PSA 7 [OC]), 27 Macauley (Ex+), 28 Mikkelsen RC (Ex+), 32 Kerr RC (Ex), 37 Hagan RC (Ex), 42 Stokes RC (Ex+), 43 Hundley RC (Ex), 44 Gola (Vg), 48 Hutchins (GAI EX-MT 6), 52 Spoelstra (PSA EX-MT 6), 53 Hopkins (PSA EX 5), 64 Burrow (PSA EX-MT 6), 71 Twyman RC (Gd), 77 Russell RC (PSA EX 5), 78 Lovellette RC (Ex-Mt), and 80 Schnittker RC (Vg). One common, #74, is graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by GAI. This is Topps' first basketball set, and the only basketball set Topps issued during the 1950s. It apparently did not sell well as Topps did not follow up with another basketball set until 1969. The set includes the rookie cards of all of the major stars of the era. 1957-1958 Topps Basketball is well known for production-related problems, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is a very attractive complete set of this extremely significant basketball issue. The SMR value for just eight of the graded cards (not including the one card graded VG-EX+, the one qualified card, or the 72 ungraded cards!) is $1,877. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA (for the one signed card). Total: 80 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,600
