1912 T227 "Series of Champions" Complete Baseball Set (4) Including Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,700

Extremely attractive complete set of all four different baseball players from the unusual and rare 1912 T227 Series of Champions set, highlighted by one Ty Cobb's most impressive tobacco cards, each graded and encapsulated by PSA (two) or SGC (two). The T227s are far more scarce than the T205 or T206 tobacco cards, but because T227s seldom survive in technically high grades, they are rarely the focus of high-grade collectors. It is believed that T227s were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling, thus accounting for their survival almost exclusively in mid or low grades. T227 "Series of Champions" cards are unique in design, and have the look of "giant T206s." There are only twenty-five cards in the set, including four ballplayers. The set of four baseball players consists of the following: "Home Run" Baker (PSA PR-FR 1, Miner's Extra), "Chief" Bender (SGC POOR 10, Honest Long Cut), Ty Cobb (PSA PR-FR 1; bright colors, flawless central image, creasing and wear visible along the perimeter, Honest Long Cut), and Rube Marquard (SGC GOOD 30, Miner's Extra). These four cards each have strong eye-appeal and, as is often the case with T227s, display far better than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades. This is a very attractive complete baseball set from this rare, uniquely designed, and, in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. The SMR value for the assigned grades is $2,000. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,700
