1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Rarity: Mike Mitchell, Cincinnati
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,400
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. One of only four examples graded at this level with just two graded higher. One of the legendary rarities of all candy cards, and long recognized as one of the key rarities of the E90-1 American Caramel candy card series in the early days of organized collecting, Mitchell, Cincinnati, was often referred to by collectors as the "Honus Wagner of E cards." Bright and clean, both front and back, with a brilliant yellow background, no caramel stains, even wear to the corners (predominately upper left), full borders, and with the slightest hint of a diamond cut. The reverse is also perfectly clean with bold black print. A tiny surface chip along the bottom affects the “inn” lettering on the team name “Cincinnati.” This is a very strong example of this legendary key rarity from the most popular caramel-card set of the era. This card (and E90-1s in general) are rarely found in high grade. Today collectors recognize many cards as being of various degrees of rarity in the E90-1 set, but Mitchell, Cincinnati (along with the Joe Jackson rookie card, also from the same set), will always be the most famous key rarity of the classic E90-1 American Caramel set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,400
