1915 New York Giants (vs. Brooklyn) Opening Day Game Program with Mathewson and Thorpe Plus 1905 Season Pass
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
1915 New York Giants opening-day program, together with a New York Giants 1905 season pass issued to future team owner Harry Hempstead and his wife. 1) The four-page program, issued for a game against Brooklyn, is dated "1915" on the cover. It's opening-day attribution is based solely upon the vintage notation scripted on the cover in black fountain pen that reads "Opening Day April 14 1915." Slightly below that is written "Giants & Brooklyn." The preprinted lineups include Mathewson, Thorpe, Snodgrass, Merkle, and Lobert for New York, and Wheat, Stengel, and Rucker for Brooklyn. The program (6.75 x 10 inches) displays both a horizontal and vertical fold, as well as heavy toning on both scorecard pages (it appears that a newspaper clipping was stored in the program for a long time). In Very Good condition. 2) The pass, numbered "4A," for the 1905 season,"Extends to Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Hempstead the Courtesy of the Polo Grounds." The facsimile signature of team owner John T. Brush appears in the lower right corner. If we had to guess, this pass was very easily obtained by Harry Hempstead, since he was Brush's son-in-law. A few years later, in 1912, Hempstead would be issuing these passes himself after he purchased the club from Brush. All early New York Giants season passes are scarce and this one, issued to a former owner of the club, is especially desirable. The pass (4 x 2.25 inches) displays three areas of moderate discoloration along the base. In Very Good condition. Total: 2 items (program and pass). Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $540
