Circa 1903 Joe McGinnity Original Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
Original news photo capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Joe McGinnity as a member of the New York Giants. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as a "Type 1 Original Photograph." Outstanding image with flawless clarity. McGinnity is pictured in a pitching pose as he displays the form that made him one of the top hurlers of his day. Based upon the uniform style shown here, this image dates to the three-year span 1902 to 1904 (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame Uniform Database). Since McGinnity was traded to New York in midseason of 1902, this photo most likely pictures him in either 1903 or 1904. The "Iron Man" was at his best during those two years, leading the National League in victories each season, with 31 and 35 wins, respectively. McGinnity photos are particularly rare (let alone in-action, on-the-field shots such as this), in part, no doubt, because his Major League career spanned just ten years (1899 to 1908), and original baseball photos from these early years of the century are rare. This photo was culled from the Chicago Sun Times archives and originally appeared as Lot 1429 in REA's May 2010 auction (realized $588). It has been consigned directly by the purchaser (who later submitted it to PSA/DNA for authentication). Reverse markings consist of the handwritten date "2-26-23" and editorial notations. The photo (5.5 x 3.75 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including minor surface wrinkles. In Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
