1899-1901 Brooklyn Superbas Program Collection (4) Including Hanlon Cover Portrait
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,000
Collection of four Brooklyn Superbas National League programs spanning the years 1899 to 1901, the highlight of which is an 1899 example featuring the portrait image of manager Ned Hanlon on the cover. 1) 1899 vs. St. Louis. The eight-page program features a portrait image of manager Ned Hanlon on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Kelley, Keeler, and Jennings for Brooklyn, and Burkett, Wallace, and Young for St. Louis. Not scored, but a few pencil notations appear in the scorecard section. The original owner has affixed a lined sheet of paper to the interior front cover which records, among other things, the date of the game as September 22, 1899. Brooklyn defeated St. Louis 2-0 on that date. The first page of the program has a neatly drawn street diagram depicting the location of Washington Park. Two initials, written in pencil, appear on the front cover. There is partial separation of both covers along the spine and a small stain in the upper left corner of the front cover. Vg overall. 2) 1899 vs. Philadelphia. The eight-page program features a portrait image of second baseman Tom Daly on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Kelley, Keeler, and Jennings for Brooklyn, and Flick, Delehanty, and Lajoie for Philadelphia. Not scored. A pencil notation on the interior front cover reads "Played at Brooklyn Friday Oct 20th/99." Brooklyn's official final game took place on October 14th in 1899, so either the notation is in error or the program was issued for a postseason exhibition game. There is very minor separation along the spine and a light stain in the upper right corner of the front cover that affects each of the interior pages as well. Vg-Ex overall. 3) 1901 vs. Pittsburgh. The fold-over scorecard features the name of the club and year on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Keeler, Kelley, and Daly for Brooklyn, and Wagner, Clarke, and Leach for Pittsburgh. Scored in pencil to record a 5-2 Pittsburgh victory. The date of the game is written in pencil on the interior. Vg, with a moderate center fold. 4) 1901 vs. Chicago. The fold-over scorecard features the name of the club and year on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Keeler, Kelley, and Daly for Brooklyn, and Chance, Waddell, and Kling for Chicago. Partially scored in pencil to record what was an eventual 5-2 Brooklyn victory. The date and final score are written in pencil on the cover. Gd, with a large corner chip in the lower right affecting both covers and a moderate center fold. Total: 4 programs. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $3,000
