1887 New York Giants (vs. Indianapolis) N172 Old Judge Advertising Scorecard
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080
This fold-over scorecard, issued for an 1887 National League game between the New York Giants and Indianapolis Hoosiers at the Polo Grounds in New York, features a colorful image of a professional ballplayer in uniform on the cover, below which is the printed caption "Three Strikes And Out." While all nineteenth-century major league scorecards are scarce, this example is especially significant, both to program and card collectors. Surrounding the cover image is advertising for the then-recently released baseball-card series issued by "Old Judge Cigarettes." The text of the advertising, which runs across the top and bottom as well as along both sides, boldly announces "Photographs of the New York Team and all the Professional Ball Players Packed In Every Package of Old Judge Cigarettes." The preprinted lineups include Ward, Connor, Gore, Richardson, and Gillespie for New York, and Glassock, Denny, Seery, and Shomberg for Indianapolis. Partially scored in pencil. The back cover of the scorecard provides the year and the Giants' home schedule for the months of August, September, and October, thereby dating the program to the second half of the season. The scorecard (4.25 x 7 inches) displays a tiny tear along the base of the spine, light toning along the interior, and a tiny pencil notation in the upper right corner of the back cover. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,080
