1887 Philadelphia Athletics (AA) vs. Philadelphia Quakers (NL) Exhibition-Game Program
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $420
Fold-over program issued for an 1887 preseason exhibition game between the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association and the Philadelphia Quakers of the National League. The colorful cover features an illustration of a generic ballplayer making a catch, below which is the caption "Home Run Spoiled." The preprinted lineups include Stovey, Flanagan, Lyons, Milligan, McGarr, and Atkinson (spelled "Atkisson") for the Athletics, and Wood, Andrews, Mulvey, Bastain, Farrar, Ferguson, and Clements for the Quakers. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 6-3 Athletics win. The date and year, "April 7th 87" is written on the interior in pencil. The Athletics opened their regular-season schedule on April 16th. The Quakers, who were playing in the newly built Baker Bowl that year, had a slightly longer wait, and did not open their National League schedule until April 30th. In addition to being a rare and extremely unusual interleague game program, this program would make a very interesting accompaniment to a Kalamazoo Bats tobacco-card collection (as this early card set features so many players from these two teams). The program (4.25 x 7.25 inches) displays partial separation along the ends of the fold line, as well a few light, scattered stains. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $300+.
