1888 N43 Allen & Ginter John Morrell
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
Extremely attractive example of John Morrell, captain and first baseman of the Boston Nationals, from the very scarce large-format N43 Allen & Ginter Champions set. N43s feature the same subjects and designs as the smaller N29 second series Allen & Ginters, but in a larger format and with extra artwork complimenting the larger design. Measuring approximately 3 x 3.25 inches, the large-format N43 Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most attractive sets ever issued. This is an exceptional sample from this popular set, and is one of only six baseball players in the series (the other subjects in the set feature stars from other sports). The card presents as Ex to Ex-Mt, with bold colors, a flawless image, and no creases or wrinkles. It has been downgraded to VG 40 by SGC due to its extreme top-to-bottom centering, which has resulted in no border at the bottom. The design of N43s, and the way in which the white border at top blends into the background, makes this centering flaw particularly tolerable compared to other issues. The checklist reverse is clean and free of any paper loss. This is a superb example of one of the key baseball players from this extremely desirable Allen & Ginter issue. Reserve $200.
