1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Complete SGC-Graded Set of Baseball Players Minus One (9/10)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,400

1888 N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" near-complete set of baseball players, consisting of nine of the ten players, including five Hall of Famers (Clarkson, Comiskey, Keefe, Kelly, and Ward). Missing only Cap Anson for completion (the Anson from this set is being offered individually in this auction due to its extreme high grade). Eight of the cards are encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). SGC Condition Report: Chas. Bennett ("Authentic," due to evidence of trimming, otherwise Gd/Vg), R. L. Caruthers (VG+ 45), John Clarkson (GOOD+ 35), Charles Comiskey (POOR 10, far superior appearance, downgraded due to very light surface loss on front and a small area of paper loss on reverse), Jack Glasscock ("Authentic," due to evidence of trimming, otherwise Vg/Ex), Tim Keefe (VG/EX+ 55), Mike Kelly (deemed "rebacked" by SGC, otherwise Pr/Fr), Joseph Mulvey (POOR 10, presents as Vg/Ex, downgraded due to paper loss on reverse), and John Ward ("Authentic," due to evidence of trimming, otherwise Ex). Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most classic of all pre-1900 issues. This is a very attractive near-complete set of baseball players from this extremely popular nineteenth-century issue, with many cards having an overall appearance far superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. Total: 9 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
