Rare 1989 Mike Schmidt Twice-Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $1,320
Personal check, dated May 9, 1989, signed twice by Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt. While it may be surprising to some, Hall of Fame check collectors are well aware that Schmidt checks are exceedingly rare. In fact, they are practically nonexistent in the marketplace. This is the first example we have ever offered and we have never seen another at auction. JSA has also confirmed its rarity in the marketplace, citing only one other example in its exemplar files. The personal check, drawn on the Mellon Bank of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, features Schmidt's name preprinted along the top border. It is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $4,000 and has been signed twice by Schmidt in blue ink, once on the front and again as an endorsement on the reverse. Both signatures are boldly scripted and grade "10." 1989 marked Schmidt's final season in the majors. The Phillies were home to the Braves on May 9, 1989, the date this check was signed. Schmidt had two of the Phillies' six hits in the club's 7-2 loss to Atlanta that night. The check (6 x 2.75 inches) displays normal cancellation stamps on the reverse (touching upon the endorsement signature) and a slight paperclip impression near the base. In Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,320
