1980 Hank Greenberg Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,000
Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed across the sweet spot by Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg. The inscription, which reads "Hank Greenberg/Detroit Tigers," has been flawlessly scripted in black felt-tip pen and grades "10." Based upon the manufacturer's stampings, this ball was produced precisely in 1980 (five dots under the Haiti stamp allows for this precise dating), and therefore was signed by Greenberg shortly before his death in 1986. Hank Greenberg single-signed ball have always been particularly scarce and very high on collectors' want lists. The demand outweighs the supply by a considerable margin. In addition to being a favorite among collectors, Greenberg passed away just before single-signed baseballs became universally recognized as the ideal and values began to skyrocket in response to collector demand. All of the manufacturer's stampings are light, but legible; otherwise the ball remains in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,000
