Circa 1970 Heinie Manush Single-Signed Ball - High-Grade Example!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,200
Official National League (Feeney) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Heinie Manush. The former Tigers star has scripted his name in black ink across the sweet spot, with the signature grading "7." The ball remains in Near Mint condition, making this an exceptional high-grade example. Manush single-signed balls are scarce. This is the first example we have ever offered and we have probably seen fewer than ten at auction in the past fifteen years. The reason for their scarcity is twofold. First, Manush wasn't elected to the Hall of Fame until 1964 (which was twenty-five years after he retired) and he died shortly after, in 1971. Therefore, collectors had only a brief seven-year window in which to obtain his signature. Second, during the 1960s, single-signed balls had yet to become the ideal for collectors. Most autograph seekers during that time usually wrote to the players and requested signed postcards or small flats. As a result, Manush singles, especially high-grade examples such as this, are seldom seen today. This ball dates from the 1970-1973 manufacturing period; therefore it was signed just shortly before his passing on May 12, 1971. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,200
