1960s Roger Maris Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,160
Official American League (Cronin) ball signed in blue ink (grading "9") on a side panel by Roger Maris. This ball dates to the 1960-1969 manufacturing period, which makes it highly probable that it was signed by Maris during his active playing career (Maris retired after the 1968 season). Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Unfortunately for collectors, Maris passed just prior to the "signing-show boom," resulting in the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. Maris has long been a favorite of forgers. With a limited supply and high demand, it’s no wonder that Maris’ signature is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era stars. Given the large number of problem "Maris" balls circulating in the marketplace today, an authentic Maris ball such as this, especially one that most likely dates from his playing career, is especially desirable. The ball displays a few scattered areas of dark discoloration, the largest of which touches upon the signature. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,160
