1984 Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris Signed Ball - Outstanding Example!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300
Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed in blue ink by both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Mantle's signature appears on the sweet spot, while Maris' is located on the North panel. Both have been boldly scripted and grade "10." Mantle/Maris signed baseballs have always been highly prized by collectors and remain the most desirable dual-signed ball in the hobby with the exception of a Ruth/Gehrig example. They are also rare. Despite the duo's fame following the historic 1961 season, balls signed by the pair are much scarcer than one would imagine. The primary reason for that is that Maris passed away in 1985, just prior to the "signing-show boom." Unfortunately, the high demand for Mantle/Maris signed balls, coupled with their scarcity, has resulted in countless forgeries over the years. Given the large number of problem "Mantle/Maris" balls circulating in the hobby today, sophisticated collectors have come to truly appreciate how rare and desirable authentic examples, such as this, are in today's marketplace. Based upon the manufacturer's stampings, this ball can be conclusively dated to 1984, which means it was signed by Maris during the final year of his life. (Interesting note: 1984 was also the very same year that the famous limited-edition of 115 H&B bats were produced that were dual-signed by Mantle and Maris.) The ball displays light-to-moderate age toning and is otherwise in spectacular Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,300
