1889 N338-2 S. F. Hess Buck Ewing
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,600
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card of Hall of Famer Buck Ewing from the S. F. Hess tobacco set, one of the most elusive of all pre-1900 card issues. The S. F. Hess series features primarily New York Giants players. Of the twenty-three subjects known to date, sixteen are members of the Giants, champions of the National League in 1888 and 1889. This is an extremely desirable example of Buck Ewing, one of the key Hall of Famers in the set, and one of only two or three S. F. Hess Ewing cards known to exist. This card presents as Very Good condition from the front, with very strong image quality, even wear to the corners, and centering slightly to the left. It has been downgraded to FAIR by SGC due to a hint of erased writing and surface indentations on the blank reverse. (Not only are these reverse flaws minor, but it is a given that flaws on the reverse often "come with the territory" when dealing with pre-1900 cards.) This is a prize example of a key Hall of Famer from N338-2 S. F. Hess Cigarettes, one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century baseball card sets. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.SOLD FOR $9,600
