1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Bill Sowders (Ball at Chest)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,280

Exceptional G & B Chewing Gum sample of Bill Sowders of the Boston Beaneaters. Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & Bs were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball-card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. The offered example is graded FAIR 20 by SGC and presents with outstanding image clarity, even wear to the corners, and a few light creases (most noticeable on the reverse). The blank reverse also displays a small area of paper loss, extremely common among nineteenth-century cards. G & Bs were issued in two styles: featuring photographic portraits of ballplayers or woodcut "line drawing" illustrations. This is an outstanding woodcut "line drawing" style sample in extremely pleasing condition from this highly regarded and very rare set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
