Circa 1953 Cy Young and Al Simmons Signed Ball - Displays as a Young Single
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900
Dual-signed baseball featuring the blue-ink signatures of Hall of Famers Cy Young and Al Simmons. The Young signature (grading "7/8") is located on a side panel, while that of Simmons (signed "A. Simmons," grading "6/7") appears on the sweet spot. The date, "3/11/53, is written on the East panel in blue ink. Interestingly, even though these two stars played in different eras, both died within a year of each other. Young passed away in 1955 at the age of eighty-eight, while Simmons died in 1956 at the age of fifty-four. Because both players died long before single-signed balls became the ideal for autograph collectors, their signatures alone on a ball are scarce today. This ball is unique in that it can be displayed as either an Al Simmons or Cy Young single if so desired. (It should be noted that both the Young signature and date are partially visible when viewing the ball as Simmons single; however, the ball displays perfectly as a Young single, with neither the Simmons signature nor the date visible when viewed in that manner.) Although the manufacturer's stampings are badly faded, precluding a positive identification, it appears to be an official American League ball. The ball is moderately toned and displays a number of small abrasions, one of which touches upon the "A" in Simmons' signature. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,900
