1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum George "Rip" Van Haltren

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,920

Rare 1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum sample of George "Rip" Van Haltren of the Chicago White Stockings. Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & Bs were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball-card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. Graded FAIR 20 by SGC, the offered example is free of any creases and displays even wear to the corners (slightly more to the top and bottom left). The photo contrast is a little light in areas. Despite its modest assigned grade, this remains a very rare sample (and featuring an extremely prominent player) from this highly regarded and very elusive set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
