1953 Mickey Mantle Signed J. D. McCarthy Postcard
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
As a child living in New York in 1953, imagine the thrill it must have been to open the mailbox one day and find this special piece: a real-photo postcard inscribed by Mickey Mantle. This postcard is one of a series produced by J. D. McCarthy, the legendary postcard manufacturer who long ago produced real-photo postcards for many players. The postcard, which pictures Mantle posing on the field at Comiskey Park in Chicago, has been beautifully inscribed in blue ink (grading “8”), “Best Wishes Mickey Mantle.” The recipient’s name and address appear on the reverse and the card is postmarked “Baxter Springs, Kansas, Jan 14, 1953.” The signature has been covered with a piece of vintage clear tape (a common practice at the time to help preserve the signature), and there is a second thin strip of clear tape affixed to the top border (not in repair of any tears). Aside from those two minor anomalies, the card (3.5 x 5.5 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an ideal Mantle vintage-signed piece, dating from the days when ballplayers actually sent signed postcards to their young fans. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+.
