Circa 1950s Nellie Fox Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320
Official National League (Giles) ball inscribed by Hall of Fame second baseman Nelliie Fox on a side panel: "Best Wishes/To John/Nelson Fox." Both the text and signature are boldly scripted in black ink and grade "9/10." The "John" to whom this ball is inscribed is none other than our consignor, who was a big Nellie Fox fan while growing up. As one can imagine, this ball has been one of his most prized possessions for many decades. Fox single-signed balls are scarce because Fox died in 1975 but wasn't elected to the Hall of Fame until 1997. This is the first example we have offered and we cannot recall having seen many others at auction over the past twenty years. The ball, which dates to the 1952-1957 manufacturing period, displays a few small, scattered areas of light discoloration and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,320
