Rogers Hornsby Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,300
Official International League (Shaunessy) ball signed by Hall of Fame second baseman Rogers Hornsby on a side panel. Hornsby has scripted his name in blue fountain pen, with the signature grading "7/8." Shaunessy was commissioner of the International League from 1937 to 1960. Since 1937 marked Hornsby's final season in the Majors, it is almost a certainty that this ball was signed by "The Rajah" during his retirement years and probably after his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. Hornsby was the greatest right-handed hitter who ever lived and is one of only two modern-day players to bat over .400 in a season three times (Ty Cobb is the other). Included among his many achievements are seven batting titles, two Triple Crowns, and a .358 lifetime average. The ball displays moderate soiling and a few minor abrasions. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,300
