1960 Chicago Cubs Team-Signed Ball with Ty Cobb (Spring Training 1960)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,280
Official National League (Giles) ball signed by Ty Cobb and seven members of the 1960 Chicago Cubs. Cobb has inscribed a side panel "Ty Cobb 3/31/60," in his customary green ink, with the signature grading "8/9." The remaining signatures on the ball, all of which are scripted in blue ink, are those of Ernie Banks, Richie Ashburn, Frank Thomas, Tony Taylor, George Altman, Sam Drake, and Lou Johnson. Cubs signatures range from "4" to "8," averaging "6/7." This ball was almost certainly obtained at a Cubs spring-training game on the date indicated by Cobb. The Cubs trained in Mesa, Arizona, in 1960 and we know with certainty, from news photos and letters, that Cobb was in Arizona and attended training that spring. In fact, Getty Image number X6593 pictures Cobb with Ted Williams at spring training on March 18, 1960, with the caption reading "MARCH 18: Baseball: Boston Red Sox Ted Williams with Hall of Famer Ty Cobb signing autographs for fans during spring training, Phoenix, AZ 3/18/1960." In addition, REA sold a Cobb letter dated March 23, 1960, that by chance also related to autographs, in which Cobb explains that he is convalescing at this time in Scottsdale, Arizona (REA May 2008 auction, Lot 988). Though Cobb was able to visit the games, write letters, and sign autographs, he was in poor health at the time, and he passed away just one year later. The ball displays light soiling, as well a minor abrasion to the Spalding logo on a side panel. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
