Circa 1923 Babe Ruth Single-Signed Ball - Remarkably Early Ruth Single!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,800
Official National League ball signed by Babe Ruth across the sweet spot. Ruth's signature is scripted in black fountain pen and grades "6" overall. This is an extremely early Babe Ruth single-signed ball. That is evident by Ruth's use of quotation marks around his first name (a practice he discontinued sometime around 1927), as well as by the ball itself. Despite the fact that the respective league president's stamped facsimile signature does not appear on a side panel, the ball can still be conclusively dated to the 1919-1924 manufacturing period by virtue of the patent date ("Patented August 31-1909") and the design of the Spalding logo on the bottom panel (small, tight seam stitches). As such, it dates to the most significant period of Ruth's career, when he completed the transition from pitcher to outfielder and became the greatest home-run hitter in baseball history. This is easily the earliest Babe Ruth single-signed ball we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen any others at auction that would unequivocally predate it. The ball displays light surface wear, including a few minor abrasions, but all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and bright. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,800
